This piece was inspired by my time in Columbia, SC. When I was in school there, I loved sitting on the steps of the State House building and looking out over Main St. To my adolescent self, lounging on that stone building felt like a little way to stake my claim in the city. The yellow jessamine, our state flower and another representation of the city, brings a sense of wildness and femininity to the heavy lines of the Capitol.
